“Northern Rus’ and early city centers in the Baltic Region”

Russian and Scandinavian scientists - about the formation of city processes in the Baltic region during the Viking Age

20 of April 2012 The Round Table was held in Norden Association. The aim of the round table was to "inventory" the various ("Western" and "East") modern ideas about formation of city processes in the Baltic region during the Viking Age. The main objective is to analyze the latest ideas and archaeological materials related to this topic.  The main focus of the project is located at the Archaeological Complex in Peredolsky Pogost which refers to such formation of city processes. 

Contents of expert’s reports and presentations will varied from panoramic surveys of the regions to the concrete historical personalities and specific events.

The second objective of the round table is to share experience and best museum practices in such areas as education and the conservation of European cultural heritage.

Topics for discussion:

  1. Typology of early city centers in the Baltic Sea Region

  2. Numismatic data as a source for studying the dynamics of economic relations and the transit trade in the Northern and Eastern Europe during the Viking Age.

  3. The influence of early city centers in the Baltic region on transformation of local social structures

  4. West and the East Baltic region VIII - XI centuries as a zone of ethnic and cultural interaction

  5. Viking Age Archaeology in Scandinavian and Russian museums.
